About Tortilis Camp

Mount Kilimanjaro stands sentinel over this tented camp in the elephant rich Amboseli.
Like all the Elewan Collection of lodges and camps in Tanzania (including Joy's Camp, Elsa's Kopje, Kitich and Lewa Safari Camp), Tortilis is set in an iconic location. In this case it's the western Amboseli, where game viewing is fruitful, accommodation is first-class, the food is Italian-style delicious, the guides are local and there's a responsible attitude towards conservation and the local communities. Here, overlooked by Mount Kilimanjaro, you can see a elephants (lots of them), hippo, lion and other big cats, and plentiful birds.Tortilis is Kenya's first eco-lodge and has won the Tourism for Tomorrow award.

Property details

The property

Thatched roofs shade the private tents and the main area, so the ambience is cool. Meals are served at individual tables, although you can have your breakfast in the the bush. The lodge has its own vegetable garden, so the salads are crisp, the vegetables have never seen a supermarket shelf, the pasta and breads are homemade and the cuisine is fantastico! There's a bar and comfortable lounge too. Outside is a lovely garden and pool, and magnificent views of Kilimanjaro.

The rooms

The 16 tents are all sheltered by deep oval thatched roofs. Each has a main bedroom with double or twin beds (which can be pushed together), an en-suite bathroom and a veranda. There's a family tent with a two bedrooma, both with en-suite bathrooms, and a private house with two bedrooms, a roomy sitting/dining area and a veranda. The interiors have hardwood floors, deep beds and lovely fabrics – very welcoming.

Activities

Don't forget your camera when exploring Amboseli and the private 30,000-acre (121,000-square kilometre) game concession around Tortilis. Take safari drives and game or birdwatching walks with knowledgeable local guides, most of whom are Masai. The safari vehicles are open-sided with photographic equipment stands. Visit local Masai homesteads to see how these ancient people live and purchase some of their beautiful beadwork and bright shukkas (blankets worn as clothing). Back at camp, there's a pool and spa, and places to rest.

Sadly, the rooms don't have a view of Kilimanjaro - you'll just have to get your fix of the mountain from the main area instead.
