About Tsara Guest House

Heritage hotel in Fianarantsoa's old town within reach of national parks
Tsara Guest House is a real gem in the old town heart of Fianarantsoa, in south-central Madagascar. A beautiful plantation-style homestead, it's a perennial favourite as it's within walking distance of the town's rich culture and architectural wonders – and also within striking distance of some of the island nation's unique natural reserves. Tsara's owners are closely involved in the restoration of the 19th-century old town, known for being the country's hub of academia. Look out over lush valleys and grand colonial-era buildings, enjoy a cocktail in the tropical gardens and plan your trips to Ranomafana and Anja reserves.

Property details

The property

There's a roaring fire to greet you as you arrive, depending on the weather; if not, the staff's smiling welcome will be just as toasty. Once settled, you'll be served truly fabulous international and local dishes in the glass-walled restaurant – Tsara's signature rum cocktails are obligatory! There's a beautiful outdoor terrace, which offers views of the gardens and valley beyond. Here you may want to enjoy afternoon tea or simply relax with a book in the balmy climate.

The rooms

Eighteen guest bedrooms of varying sizes are all spacious, with generous beds, comfortable chairs, a desk and a good-sized balcony with views of the valley or the old town. Most of the rooms also offer en-suite bathrooms. The styling is simple and understated, but the rooms are homely, clean and have wi-fi – an unusual perk in Madagascar.

Activities

After exploring the old city, head off on a day trip, which can be arranged at the hotel. Tour the nearby tea plantations and learn about one of Madagascar's core industries; visit the national parks of Ranomafana (with its unique biodiversity that includes lemurs, sifakas and other creatures you may never have heard of) and Andringitra (soaring mountains) and Isalo (great for hiking), as well as intriguing Anja Community Reserve. Day trips include park entry, guides and a picnic lunch.
