Follow Tulia's slick paved driveway into a grand cul-de-sac corralled by trees and reception's open foyer. Wander through and discover a succession of makuti-thatched structures (lounge/dining room/bar) and an interior garden with a free-form pool surrounded by wicker loungers and umbrellas. In a second pool, twin waterslides disgorge their excited contents – kids of all ages. At the edge of the garden, a sand pit with lounge chairs faces the ocean, serving as the beach when the beachfront is submerged.
Villas are of three types, all exceptionally modern and luxurious. Five Seafront Luxury Villas have views of the ocean, an outdoor patio and private garden. They have coconut-wood floors, a small lounge, en-suite bathroom and freestanding tub. Deluxe Garden Bungalows are smaller, with views of the interior gardens and palm grove, and partial ocean views. The secluded Royal Villa is the star attraction, with its private slice of garden accessed through French doors, and an expansive deck with a Jacuzzi.
Although the beach disappears at high tide, this side of the island still offers plenty for keen ocean-lovers. Snorkelling and SCUBA trips to Mnemba Island, and dolphin excursions, can be arranged (extra cost). Exploring beyond the shallows can be done at your leisure (go within a few hours of high tide). Masks and fins are available from the lodge (free), as are kayaks and bicycles. Visit Jozani Forest to see red colobus monkeys, and stroll historic Stone Town's winding alleys.
