The house has a distinct air of Downton Abbey and you'll find plenty of cosy fireplaces, heavy, champagne drapes and a grand piano. The dining room is a vision in vermilion, and a large mahogany table takes centre place with a droplet chandelier glinting overhead. Here, enjoy Sri Lankan cuisine prepared with fresh ingredients from the organic garden and orchard. Then, pop outside for English tea and picnic lunches on the lawns, with the sound of birdlife twittering cheerfully.
Decorated in a variety of warming tones, the five rooms have been carefully restored to their former glory. In each, there are dark wood beds and plump armchairs and sofas provide cosy reading spots. There are three deluxe rooms with peaceful garden views, a fireplace and large bathtub. The White Room is dressed in pristine textiles and antique wooden furnishings, with a separate living area and stunning mountain vistas. Alternatively, the Warwick Room is bold and plush, with a sweeping view of the plantations below.
Disappear into nature along one of the area's many trails, taking in the verdant greenery, soaring mountain views and chattering birdlife. Head a little further afield to the highest grasslands in Sri Lanka, Horton Plains, for explorations on foot, or to the ancient Hakgala Botanical Gardens to see the famous orchids. Enjoy a visit to one of many local tea factories and see how the leaves are processed. Back at the hotel, learn to cook a Sri Lankan curry like a pro with the chef.
Adopt a British sensibility with a Sri Lankan zest for life in this rose-tinted, colonial hill town.
