Surrounded by lush green jungle, this sprawling safari camp feels totally wild, yet with more than a few added luxuries. Dinner is best begun with a cocktail in the Ten Tuskers bar before heading to the chic, bamboo-clad pavilion for a feast of fresh seafood and local dishes. Keep your eyes peeled and your ears alert for the local hooligans, (AKA the monkeys) as they swing through the trees! If you're after relaxation, then be sure to spend some time lounging by the pool or enjoying a spa treatment.
There are three types of 'cocoon' suites available - luxury, pool and family - and all 36 are dotted around a cluster of waterholes in the shape of a leopard's paw. All have polished teak floors and canvas walls, king-size beds, ensuite bathrooms, air-conditioning (bliss), a viewing deck, WiFi, minibar and sound system. The cocoon pool suites have their own plunge pool and the family suites sleep four in the main cocoon and two in the playful 'urchin' outside.
The pièces de résistance at Wild Coast is the incredible wildlife opportunities - enjoy game drives to spot a plethora of animals (leopard is always at the top of the list) or take a guided walk into the bush. Foodies can learn to cook Sri Lankan cuisine, or enjoy jungle-themed afternoon teas, and there are also visits to local landmarks like the monastery Sithulpawwa, and the temple complex Kataragama. Kids needs not miss out either and the junior ranger course will have them identifying tracks, pitching tents, and building campfires in no time.
A famous, leopard-speckled slice of nature to make your big cat dreams come true.
