Zomerlust is a restored Cape Dutch manor house in Paarl, first built in 1792 and now a boutique hotel after a heritage-approved makeover. Dinner is at SMEUL, a fire-led restaurant in the old basement, and afternoons drift into the Sun Stoep, where coffee, drinks and snacks are on the house from 4 pm. Some rooms have William Morris wallpaper, others have mountain views, and the oldest sit in the former stables, Die Stalle. A library with a fireplace and a guests-only pool round things off.

Flame-cooked dinner in the basement of a 1792 manor, then a book by the library fireplace.
