Embedded in the frangipani- and orchid-filled gardens, the spa is one of the Alila's greatest drawcards. After selecting your preferred oil, you'll be treated to the treatment of your choice, followed by relaxation on the deck with a bowl of strawberry sorbet. Beneath a canopy of thatch, the open-air Plantation restaurant combines healthy eating and fine dining with a menu of veggie spring rolls, Balinese coconut curries, and banana fritters topped with ice cream.
Scattered across the grounds, there are 14 double-storey wood and stone structures, which house the rooms, while the stilted villas are more private. The rooms are all equipped with king-sized beds draped in white linens and cushy duvets, outdoor bathrooms, and balconies with views of the river valley below. The Ayung River Villas are a particular favourite with their wrap-around decks perched over the gorge, and huge bathtubs that sink into the lotus ponds. Some villas also have their own pool.
There are all sorts of activities to enjoy at the Alila. Begin your day with a Tai Chi class, before exploring the alleys of Ubud and discovering the art galleries and crafting workshops, before returning for a massage at the spa. You could also opt for a day filled with adventure, either rafting on the Ayung River, exploring the bamboo forests of the Bangli Regency, or climbing Mount Batur in time to catch the sunrise.
