About Amakhala Woodbury Tented Camp

Enjoy an excellent Big Five safari from this good-quality camp on a malaria-free reserve.
Amakhala is a 7,500-hectare private reserve established in 1999 by six families whose descendants arrived in the area with the 1820 British settlers. Their aim? To return the land to its natural wild state. And what a success it's been, with elephant, rhino, cheetah, springbok, jackal, caracal and many other species roaming free. At the reserve's heart is Woodbury Tented Camp, one of the few lodges and camps here, surrounded by trees and overlooking the floodplain of the Bushman’s River. It's a well-run camp, with comfortable accommodation, excellent food and capable guides. It's affordable too, so great for family vacations.

Property details

The property

Camp life is centred around the stone, thatch and canvas dining and lounge area set above the Woodbury plain and a well-visited waterhole. Enjoy well-prepared meals at the long table, served to your specifications, while being warmed by a log fire. Outside is a large veranda with a central fireplace and braai area – settle back and listen to fish-eagles soar, their haunting cry echoing across the valley. Wi Fi available in main area.

The rooms

There are seven large tents on raised bases, each positioned to make sure you're undisturbed. Each has twin or double beds with heated blankets to protect you against night-time chills, an en-suite bathroom with basin, shower and a separate private toilet, and a private deck area. The look is sleek and very comfortable, the views are big and you'll get the occasional grazing visitor. There are two family tents, with a children's tent adjoining that of their parents.

Activities

Morning and evening game drives are led by experienced rangers with intriguing stories to tell. Cruise the river to investigate the bush and birdlife, take an off-site outing to the nearby university town of Grahamstown, Port Alfred – a holiday haven, and bustling Port Elizabeth. Feel like doing as little as possible? Laze beside the pool, sip on a cocktail and gaze at the scenery.
