The property

Surrounded by palms with kingfishers flitting overhead, the pool is large with private cabanas to relax in. Amangalla also has a stylish spa with a range of Ayurvedic treatments and hydrotherapy suites complete with hot and cold plunge pools. Enjoy afternoon tea on the verandah with views of the historic Church Street or sip cocktails on the Sunset Balcony. Decorated with antique furnishings and chandeliers, the dining hall serves local favourites and international fare as jazz pianists fill the room with music.

The rooms

With views of either the tropical garden or Galle Fort, Amangalla has simple yet homely rooms or larger suites, each with well-appointed bathrooms. Decked out in four-poster beds, old-fashioned chests and a bar cabinet, the rooms have a traditional feel. The suites also come with a lounge area and view of the harbour. Set apart from the other rooms, the two-storey Garden House has a wrap-around balcony, a bedroom on the top floor and spacious dining room that opens onto the lawns.

Activities

Take a trip to the local market where you can choose ingredients with the chef before preparing a traditional meal at Amangala's pavilion set among the lush rice paddies. Tour a nearby cinnamon estate where you'll learn all about this Sri Lankan staple and if you're up for venturing a little further, visit a centuries old rock temple where they offer a blessing to guests at dusk. In season, enjoy an unforgettable whale watching tour from Mirissa Harbour, combined with a picnic on the beach!
