Amankora Bumthang

Understated and easy on the eye, the two-storey hotel has a central dining area furnished with puce armchairs and a crackling fireplace. Tuck into tasty meals like yak carpaccio and stop at the bar for a drink to suit any season. To soak up the views, you can also enjoy meals in the courtyard under the shade of fruit trees or lounge in the cushioned seating area where local performers entertain in the evenings. The spa offers treatments infused with local herbs and mountain honey, and morning yoga sessions can be enjoyed on the lawns.

In true Aman fashion, the 16 suites are sleek and minimalist, decorated in cream hues and soft rugs. A king-size bed dominates the room, which also comes with a small lounge area, window seat and traditional wood-burning stove - but no TV. Sliding screen doors open to reveal a terrazzo-clad bathtub (and separate shower), twin vanity counters and shelves dotted with custom toiletries. Tall windows reveal the ever-present view and there's even a woven basket that holds walking sticks to use on hikes into the countryside.

Bumthang is dotted with ancient temples and forts, which stand like sentinels next to quaint villages. Just across the valley and up a winding stone path sits one of the largest forts in the country, the Jakar Dzong - a picture of Bhutanese architecture. At the Taktsang Monastery, witness the lighting of 108 butter lamps and join the monks for their evening prayer. You can also tour the Red Panda Brewery and sample the Weiss beer, enjoy a traditional lunch at a nearby farmhouse or try your hand at archery!
