"Lovingly restored" may be an overused term, but it fits Ashbourne House to a T. The building sits in a quiet residential lane, with an elegant veranda inviting guests into the reception area. Wander through to the guest lounge/bar for drinks (the huge stone fireplace warms winter visitors), or to the shady patio overlooking the gardens and heated swimming pool. The breakfasts, served in the dining room or on the pool terrace, are deliciously country style. Wi-fi is available throughout.
Eight spacious luxury suites, some accommodating three guests, are individually styled to reflect the colonial heritage of this historic building. The decor is crisp and elegant cottage style, with beautiful linens and bright cushions adding a modern pop of colour. All have huge en-suite bathrooms, with generous showers. No two suites are alike – some have private balconies with mountain views; others have their own patio overlooking the courtyard gardens.
Winter or summer, Franschhoek has a huge range of attractions all within easy reach of Ashbourne House. Take a stroll through the village and have a bite to eat in some of the excellent restaurants and cafes, and browse the fascinating art galleries and artisan markets. Hire a mountain bike and explore the vineyards, mountains and forests; hike through nature reserves and look out for wildlife, or take a hop-on, hop-off tour of the winelands on Franschhoek’s Wine Tram.
