About Auberge Provence

A castle on the cliffs
This little piece of France is perched on top of the magnificent Hermanus cliffs with views (we’re going to say it!) 'to die for' over whale-watcher’s paradise Walker Bay and the misty mountains beyond. In fact, the location is so good that whales can often be spotted from the hotel’s terrace or if you’re really lucky, from your bed. With only 5 rooms, the Provencal-style Farmhouse is intimate and friendly and the service absolutely impeccable, making this an excellent base for whale-watching, wine-tasting and everything else Hermanus has to offer.

Property details

The property

The Farmhouse is hard to miss on the Hermanus coastal path with its majestic russet façade and traditional wrought-iron balconies. Inviting oak doors lead to a fragrant and shady courtyard and pretty stone terrace at the back, where breakfast is often served. A swimming pool and sun loungers provide a perfect spot to relax and soak up the sun, whilst the spacious sitting and dining areas inside are cosy and just waiting for the crackle of a roaring fire.

The rooms

The 5 suites are individually designed but all are decorated in soft, relaxing tones with lots of natural wood and crisp linens in a pretty French country style. All take advantage of the magnificent vista (views from the Harbour and Fynbos suites are, we think, the best) whilst the Lavender suite has a private courtyard and mini plunge pool and the Overberg, its own Jacuzzi for those looking for a spot of romance.

Activities

Whale-watching is the name of the game in Hermanus; hike one of the pretty trails along the cliffs and try and catch a glimpse of the great mammals, or join a boat trip and get up close and personal. If you’re feeling adventurous, the hotel can organise shark-cage diving or otherwise, take it slow and wander down to the old harbour and markets and explore the culinary delights of Hermanus.
