About Baia Sonambula

World-class diving, beautiful beaches and great waves in Mozambique.
Baia Sonambula holds pride of place at Tofo Beach on southern Mozambique's Inhambane Peninsula. Beaches don't come much more beautiful; here, golden sand meets the deep turquoise-blue of the warm Indian Ocean. Perfect right-handers peel off the point and, under the surface, the waters teem with marine life. This boutique guesthouse has only six bungalows, so it's never crowded. Service is always friendly and personal, and the homemade food is superb. When you add in the super-comfortable accommodation and lush emerald and bougainvillea-filled gardens, you've basically got the ultimate beach holiday.

Property details

The property

Exceptional homemade breakfasts are served on the roof terrace, with its front-row view of the beach. There are several other wooden decks and terraces to choose from, depending on whether you want sun or shade, and a few cool spots indoors. And, of course, there's also the kilometres-long stretch of golden beach dotted with shaded beach loungers, and the invitingly warm ocean. In the kitchen, a well-stocked honesty bar has ice-cold drinks and a tea and coffee station.

The rooms

This boutique hotel has only six rooms, called bungalows – four are sea-facing, two are surrounded by lush gardens. The rooms are relatively simple but make lovely use of neutral colours, natural wood, and cool fabrics that catch the breeze. Large glass doors open on to private decks, with cushioned daybeds, comfy chairs and spectacular views. Double beds draped with mosquito nets stand in the centre of the room, and charming en-suite bathrooms have all the mod cons.

Activities

As awesome as its beach and sea are, Tofo's attraction is undoubtedly the world-class diving. Between the creatures great (whale sharks, manta rays, humpback whales and dolphins) and small (nudibranches and a plethora of tropical reef fish), there's so much to see you'll hardly want to surface for oxygen. On dry land, there are lots of opportunities to chill, be it by the pool, on your deck, or at one of the bars and restaurants in nearby Tofo.
