Tucked into the foothills of the Swartberg Mountains, Buffelsdrift is a convenient safari pitstop on the Garden Route that delivers proper bushveld atmosphere without the malaria tablets. The lodge hugs a five-hectare waterhole where hippos grunt and terrapins paddle, while giraffe, zebra and buffalo graze the opposite banks. It's more accessible glamping than remote wilderness – just ten minutes from Oudtshoorn and the famous Cango Caves – but that proximity to civilisation is part of its charm. Dawn meerkat safaris, night drives in search of the elusive 'shy five', and encounters with rescued elephants add genuine wildlife credentials, whilst the restaurant dishes up hearty Karoo fare alongside award-winning Route 62 wines. A solid choice for families or anyone wanting to dip their toes into safari life.

The heart of the lodge is a wooden deck that wraps around the waterhole's edge, with a lookout lounge centred on a huge round stone fireplace – rather cosy when those Klein Karoo evenings turn crisp. The restaurant specialises in honest Karoo cooking: think homemade preserves, slow-braised game and freshly baked bread, all paired with a wine list that's picked up a DinersClub Diamond award for its Route 62 selection. French doors open onto the deck in summer, bringing in balmy evenings and the occasional hippo serenade. A residents' pool overlooks the water, and there's an on-site spa for post-safari pampering.
Thirty-four canvas-clad tents are scattered across the property, each a step up from traditional camping. The waterhole tents sit right at the water's edge with private decks that practically overhang the dam – ideal for sundowners and early-morning wildlife spotting without leaving bed. Horizon View tents are slightly elevated, offering broader vistas across the fynbos to the Swartberg peaks beyond. All come with air-conditioning (essential in summer), en-suite bathrooms, private outdoor showers, mini-bar and tea and coffee facilities. Family tents have two bedrooms sharing a bathroom, sleeping up to five – perfectly workable for a multi-generational trip.
Sundowners on your private deck, watching hippos surface in the waterhole below while the Swartberg Mountains blush pink in the fading light.
The dawn meerkat safari is the sleeper hit here – watching these endearing little sentinels pop up from their burrows as the Karoo sun rises is magical.
This isn't untamed wilderness – it's a well-run game farm with a visitor-attraction feel. Safari purists might want something wilder.
A pretty, settlement-era outpost deep in the heart of the Klein Karoo
