About Camp Chitubu

A wild ridge-top safari camp in remote Hwange with big game, big skies and superb walks.

Tucked away on a ridgeline in Hwange’s remote Sinamatella region, Camp Chitubu is the kind of place you find when you’re truly searching for wilderness. Overlooking a natural spring and open salt pan, the camp sits at the heart of prime big-game territory and offers access to the walking safaris that Zimbabwe is renowned for — slow, immersive journeys where every track and birdsong tells a story. It’s intimate, unfussy and wonderfully wild; mornings drift in with the dawn chorus, and evenings end under star-splashed skies with lions calling from somewhere out in the dark.

Property details

The property

Camp Chitubu feels like an old-school bush camp — sandy floors, a relaxed Bedouin-style lounge, and a firepit that quickly becomes the social heart of the evening. The communal canvas area houses the dining space, bar and comfy seating, all open to the views so you never lose sight of the reason you came. With just a handful of tents plus a family unit, the atmosphere stays quiet and personal — perfect for those who prefer wilderness over Wi-Fi (though don’t worry, solar power keeps the lights and chargers happily running). It’s simple, considered, and built to celebrate the landscape rather than compete with it.

The rooms

Set on raised platforms with canvas walls that peel open to the valley, the tents feel close to the bush in all the best ways. Inside, it’s simple, comfy and quietly stylish — a peaceful place to drift off after long days on foot or on game drive. Families are well looked after too, with a two-bedroom unit that shares the same sweeping views and easy, laid-back charm.

Activities

This is a camp for proper, boots-on-the-ground safari lovers. Walking safaris are a highlight here, led by experienced guides who specialise in reading tracks, scents and subtle bush cues most of us never notice. Of course, classic game drives are still on offer (morning and afternoon), and the wildlife in this corner of Hwange is famously abundant — elephants by the dozen, buffalo, zebra, predators, and serious birding to boot.

Insiders tip

Insiders Tip

Hwange can be surprisingly chilly in the mornings, especially up on the ridge — pack a warm layer for those early starts.

Something to think about

If you prefer a more polished, built-up camp, this might feel a touch too rustic, but for lovers of authentic, old-school safari, it’s an absolute gem.
