About Casa del presidente

A storied private villa on the edge of the sprawling Chicomocha Canyon in Colombia's north
Dubbed one of the prettiest towns in Colombia, Barichara is a maze of quaint streets and white-washed structures brightened by wooden doors and shutters. Nestled amidst the aged Spanish architecture, Casa del Presidente is the former home of late president, Belisario Betancur and has quite the history. Now a private villa, guests are looked after by a dedicated team including a personal host and chef. From multiple sunny vantage points across the grounds, you'll enjoy views of the plunging Chicomocha Canyon. Set out to explore its many trails and when you return, a dinner tailored to your tastes awaits...

Property details

The property

Refreshed and refined, the Casa del Presidente is bright and lovely and filled with artisanal wicker and wood furniture. The house is surrounded by gardens filled with fruit trees and shaded terraces, as well as alfresco spaces to enjoy personalised yoga sessions, meditation and massages. Breakfasts are a feast of freshly-baked breads, homemade jams, and made-to-order eggs, while other meals are curated to your exact preferences. In the evening, look forward to dinner served by the light of a bonfire.

The rooms

The Casa del Presidente has just five bedrooms, each featuring a large wooden bed draped in crisp white linens, artisanal furnishings and lovely, locally-sourced artwork. The rooms are supremely spacious without any clutter or overdone decor, and all open onto a veranda with delightful garden views. The bathrooms are well-appointed with rainfall showers and neat amenities.

Activities

Barichara is set alongside the striking Chicomocha Canyon, making it an ideal starting point for biking and hiking trips as well as ziplining and white-water rafting. You can also explore the little-visited towns along the canyon's edge to really get a feel for the area. Barichara is a hub of Colombian art and crafts, and you'll have the chance to visit a number of studios and artisans who are skilled in stone carving and pottery. Then, return to the villa for a cooling dip in the pool.
