With views that reach all the way to Chicamocha National Park, Casa Yahri sits pretty on the hills above Barichara. Although it is far too casual for anything like a restaurant, the delightful Dona Blanca produces a fantastic spread of fresh bread, cereals, arepas, fruit and eggs to order in the morning, served with rich coffee (of course) or hot chocolate. The hotel also has a collection of indoor-outdoor decks with loungers and pretty tables and chairs, and an infinity lap pool with a sublime view.
There are just four rooms, all with exposed brickwork, gnarled ceiling beams, and flagstone floors. The king-sized beds are large with colourful linens and finely-carved headboards, while the rest of the room is dotted with antique furnishings. Bedrooms range in size with the Aratoca or Chicamocha suites being the largest. The former is part of the original 19th-century house and has an outdoor shower, while Chicamocha has its own terrace and plunge pool. All have aircon, wifi and a minibar.
There's plenty to do in Barichara ranging from cooking classes to lessons in artisanal crafts like ceramics, weaving and clay painting, visits to local coffee farms and guided tours of the town. Adventure seekers can enjoy hikes into the surrounding countryside (they range from ambles along the Camino Real to full-day explorations), go rafting on the Chicamocha River, ride horseback through the fields, or rapel down waterfalls. For the best views around, ride the cable car across the canyon.
Revel in the lazy pace of life in the Andes in Colombia’s prettiest town.
