About Cavers Country Guest House

Old-school hospitality at this historic homestead in the Karoo
Sheathed in ivy and ringed by the loveliest of green gardens, Cavers Guest House is a monument to a very grand past. If these walls could talk, they would speak of cricket on the pitch, traditional Sunday lunches and lush afternoon teas – but they would also tell of drought and hardship. This fifth-generation family-owned farmhouse, lying outside the sleepy Karoo town of Bedford, has real historic charm. You'll find refinement in the 1840's stone manor house and thatched garden cottage, and the gardens, and have a chance to investigate this working farm, with merino sheep, angora goats and cattle.

Property details

The property

Amble up the long, oak-lined driveway towards the towering stone facade of the manor house. Inside, you'll find features typical of the era in which it was built – high-beamed ceilings, yellowwood floors and a broad stone hearth. The small but elegant dining room has a long hardwood table, bathed in light cast by a low-hanging chandelier. Outside, the broad stone patio is where breakfasts are served, with views of the mountains. Two swimming pools sparkle in the sunshine.

The rooms

Four traditional bedrooms in the manor house all have high ceilings, large windows, en-suite bathrooms, and doors that open to private patios and the gardens, or face the Cowie River. With white linens and classic Victorian lines, they have a fresh and welcoming, , not-too-formal atmosphere. For something extra special, the thatched, white-walled cottage in the white rose garden has a cosy, storybook feel. It offers two bedrooms with a shared bathroom, and a kitchenette with a fridge and microwave.

Activities

The Eastern Cape is largely unsung, so there are many treasures to unearth. Deserted, aloe-flanked highways link a scattering of small settlements, including pretty Bedford. First impressions are that there's little more than the historic cricket club and the annual garden show in October (when the population balloons briefly), but linger and you'll uncover its understated charms. Hike the farm's five trails for some excellent birding, and to approach the Cowie River. Try fishing, and do inspect those inspiring gardens.
