Stylishly drawing on traditional Swahili architecture, the reception at The Sands boasts an interior of warm, earthy tones that reflects the beauty of the island. Centred around a stunning private beach, the lounge areas are a collection of bright and breezy, open-sided thatch buildings, and the two swimming pools are the perfect place to cool off in the afternoon. Food at the main restaurant is a mixture of traditional Kenyan cuisine, Italian and Oriental, while quirky Katika Ziwa serves up fresher than fresh seafood, accompanied by those glorious ocean seascapes.
Surprisingly there are almost 50 rooms on the tiny island, ranging from semi-circular rooms with verandas, to traditional thatched bandas with private lawns, and Penthouse Suites swaying high above the treetops. There's also an Over Water Bungalow (the only one in Kenya!) and our favourite, the Suite on the Rock, built on its very own rocky outcrop and connected to the mainland by a bridge. All rooms have air-conditioning, en-suite bathrooms and all-important sea views.
From spa treatments to adventure, The Sands has something for everyone. Its world-renowned onsite PADI and SSI centre offers guided diving excursions of the surrounding coral reefs and other water activities include game-fishing, catamaran sailing, glass-bottom boat rides and boat snorkelling. Opt for a canoeing trip to explore ancient mangroves or sign up for a guided hiking tour of the island. Staff members are also able to arrange safari trips to Kenya's top game reserves, as well as day trips to Diani Beach.
Sip cocktails at sunset and chill-out in style in Kenya’s most sophisticated beach paradise.
