About Chalkley Treehouse at Lion Sands

Fall asleep above the wildlife, safely snuggled on your treehouse perch.

Chalkley Treehouse is named for Guy Aubrey Chalkley, the early 20th-century hunter and African explorer who founded Lion Sands Game Reserve and famously climbed a leadwood to escape attack by predators. Built to echo the spirit of adventure shown by the reserve's founder, the treehouse is a private bush escape like no other. Not only is it on a level with the highest tier of trees, it's extremely luxurious and well-appointed. Lion Sands lies in the game-prolific Sabi Sand game reserve (which borders southern Kruger National Park), which means a truly wonderful setting for your wild and wonderful escape.

Property details

The property

Set on a wooden platform built against an ancient, twisted leadwood tree, the treehouse's beauty may be described by the elements it lacks: walls, electricity – in fact, anything that might divert attention from your full experience of the surroundings. Climb the long staircase and open the sturdy door to reach the very top of this fantasy retreat. The large cushioned love seat, the table set for two, and scattered lanterns are all you need to enjoy this lofty setting.

The rooms

Rest assured. There's no chance you'll feel the cold – the king-sized mattress, crisp cotton linens and fluffy down duvets mean you'll be royally comfortable. Mosquito netting draped across a four-poster frame will keep the critters out but let the starlight in. As far as nature's call goes – don't worry, a flushable loo and a vanity unit with a sink are just a few steps down.

Activities

You'll arrive at Chalkley at sunset to find ice-cold champagne and a gourmet tapas-style picnic. Spend the evening drinking in the bush sounds, the night sky, and the sense that you're immersed in a wilderness you've only seen from ground level. Your guide is just a radio-call away; he'll collect you in the morning for a game drive, or to return to your lodge. (The treehouse is booked in conjunction with a stay at one of Lion Sands' main lodges.)
