About Chindeni Bushcamp

Tented and soulful serenity above a pretty lagoon in the southern South Luangwa.
For a safari that’s intimate, evocative and full of close encounters of the bush kind, there’s no better place to base yourself than at Chindeni in the southern region of the South Luangwa. The 4 elegant tents are set on the edge of the perennial Chayumba lagoon and with snorting hippo and wallowing elephant a permanent fixture, you don’t need to venture far from the camp for fantastic game viewing. But with guides as good as these, you’ll want to make the most of every single walking safari and night drive that’s on offer.

Property details

The property

The open dining and lounge area is raised on stilts over the lagoon to the make most of the impressive view. The multi-level decking is wound around majestic old tamarind and ebony trees and meals are usually served on the top floor, whereas underneath is reserved for relaxing with wicker sofas and chairs dotted around in the shade. From the bar, there are steps down to the edge of the lagoon for pre-dinner drinks with a difference.

The rooms

Sleeping under canvas is always magical but with vaulted canvas ceilings, huge four-poster beds and stripped wooden floors, the rooms at Chindeni make it feel extra special. All rooms also have a mini inside sitting area, outside balcony with hammock and chairs and a writing desk for any Ernest Hemingway moments. Bathrooms are ensuite and come complete with smart white china fittings and plenty of hot water.

Activities

The South Luangwa is known for its expert guides and Chindeni is no exception so expect activities to be fun-filled and full of interesting facts. Embrace nature on a legendary walking safari; sister camp Bilimungwe is only 6 kilometres away and a walk between the two is a wonderful experience. Game drives are also available and in the evening last until around 8pm giving you the opportunity to spot some of the rare night creatures.

Insiders tip

Insiders Tip

Walking from camp to camp with a guide and scout (and a cup of tea and biscuits!) is the best way to discover the South Luangwa and feel like a true explorer. Chamilandu and Bilimungwe are the camps closest to Chindeni if you fancy it.
Something to think about

Something to think about

If you’re visiting in November or December, expect a little bit of rain. It shouldn’t hamper your stay but walking may be postponed until the showers stop.
