About Cottar's 1920s Safari Camp

When you're face to face with elephants, city life seems far away

Located in its own private conservancy just one kilometre from Kenya's famous Masai Mara Reserve, Cottar’s 1920s Safari Camp was created by Calvin and Louise Cottar in the mid-1990s. You're in the hands of experts – the owners are the fifth generation of a family recognised as the oldest established and continuing safari family in Africa. So you'll experience the perfect combination of adventure, adrenalin and comfort. The plains are alive with animals, the Masai guides are gold-star professionals, the tented rooms offer relaxation in luxurious style and the food is fresh and fabulous.

Property details

The property

The camp has two main communal areas under canvas where guests gather to relax, read and dine in fine 1920s style. For an after-safari treat, book a massage in the spa area or take a dip in the pool. Later, listen to the baboons barking and whispering night sounds while you stretch out at the firepit with your nightcap.

The rooms

The camp has 15 cream canvas tents in total (three lovely honeymoon tents, five double tents and seven family suites), all redolent of the 1920s with romantic mosquito-netted beds, en-suite bathrooms and, for your comfort, other mod cons. The family tents have living rooms with fireplaces. All the tents are private and quiet, suiting everyone from honeymooners to families with young children. Nearby, private Cottar’s Bush Villa has its own long swimming pool.

Activities

The Masai Mara has the largest concentration of terrestrial wildlife on the planet, so there's plenty to see and photograph. Take guided day and night game drives, see the smaller species and birds on a walking safari, or rest with a gin and tonic on the veranda and take in the view that stretches to the distant horizons of the Mara and Serengeti plains. Visit a Masai community – these interactions are welcomed and are conducted respectfully, in case you're hesitant.
