About Deloraine House

A gracious Kenyan family homestead known for its superb horseback safaris
Deloraine House is a magnificent colonial home on a family-owned estate that lies on the western edge of Kenya’s Great Rift Valley. Built almost a century ago, the house has an intriguing history that includes frequent visits from British royalty and distinguished members of Kenya’s high society. The estate is beautifully positioned on the densely forested lower slopes of Londiani Mountain, an extinct volcano, and is the base for the well-known Offbeat Riding Safaris. Its equestrian facilities are certainly fantastic, as is the accommodation. There are just eight rooms, and a relaxed and friendly family atmosphere permeates throughout.

Property details

The property

Honey-coloured sandstone arches open to the wide veranda that fronts the house. Here, from the dining area and comfortable couches, you overlook the manicured lawns. Indoors, there’s a formal dining room and a lounge with an open fireplace, and a staircase leading from the central hallway up to the guest rooms. The atmosphere is home-style relaxed and easygoing. The owners live here too, so you’ll feel like you’re part of the family right from the start. The pool is sublime...

The rooms

Three large en-suite double rooms and two family rooms linked by a shared bathroom open on to the upper balcony, overlooking the wonderful gardens. The suites are all beautifully appointed, with vintage furniture and a nostalgic generations-old atmosphere. A separate garden wing houses three further en-suite bedrooms, all slightly more modern in style. The effect all round is relaxed yet luxurious, with plenty of space and an emphasis on comfort and practicality.

Activities

The highlight here is the horse riding, with some 80 well-schooled horses suitable for riders of all capabilities. Explore the farm, take a longer trail into the forests and mountains, enjoy cross-country jumping or play polo. Spend a day in Lake Nakuru National Park, renowned for its huge flocks of flamingo, black and white rhino and a variety of other wildlife. Worn out? Relax beside the pool, dreaming of your next meal – which will be fabulous.
