Using local materials, the lodge is mostly built from wood and bamboo, with open-plan spaces positioned for the ultimate view. In the main house, there is a cosy dining area and free-form kitchen where the chefs whip up colourful dishes from the ever-changing menu like tamales and seafood ceviches. In your down time, there is a river-fed pool and shelves of books to enjoy in the rustic lounge or whilst swinging idly in a hammock, and evenings are often spent round the fire.
There are six cabins set along the Rio Mindo with understated, comfortable rooms and heavyset wooden beds draped in local textiles. Large windows bring the outdoors in, waking you with the sound of bubbling water and chirruping birds. The bathrooms feature large, alfresco tubs, all of which have fantastic views. The rooms also have a separate sitting area and hammock to laze in as the cool forest air blows on by.
Your explorations of the forest will be led by experienced Mindo guides, who know the scenery like their own garden. Marvel at the rainbow of birdlife and orchids (there are over 200 species in the Harmonia Garden), the tranquil river and cascading falls. Take in the view on a canopy tour or horseback ride - look out for the reserve's more secretive wildlife - or visit a chocolate factory and get a taste of Ecuador's finest.
