About Habitas Namibia

Utter tranquillity in the Namibian desert
At the heart of any safari experience is the desire to connect, or reconnect, with something – oneself, the earth, a sense of space. Fulfilling that need for deeper human connections is the core mission of the Habitas group of international hotels and camps. The group's latest venture is in the Namib Desert, an hour's drive from the Namibian capital, Windhoek. Here, on a private 35,000-hectare reserve, you'll find a camp where the real luxury lies in its simplicity, from the clean lines and practically wall-less structures to the guided bush walks and emphasis on local knowledge and culture.

Property details

The property

The main area is a flat, slightly elevated platform with a stretched-canvas roof and full-circle views. On it are several intimate seating areas in soft desert tones, with ethnic rugs, modern sofas, and floor cushions. The atmosphere is pleasantly bohemian and relaxed, perfect for convivial gatherings, or for quiet reflection. The dining area is an impressive half-dome, reed-built structure lined with wood panelling. Outside is a sunken fireplace area, surrounded by canvas chairs with uninterrupted views of the sky.

The rooms

Also raised on wooden platforms, the rooms have the same minimalist stretch-tent design. There are few walls, though roll-away mesh helps keep things secure. Beds are king-sized or twins, and the en-suite bathroom has a luxurious rain shower. A broad deck encircling the room is furnished with a telescope and sofa, and a table and chairs for private dining. In front is small platform with a fire pit, perfect for admiring the most star-studded of night skies.

Activities

This private reserve, once the preserve of hunters, is being rehabilitated for photographic tourism, and it's wonderful to see the wildlife numbers climbing once more. There are few predators here, but you'll see elephant, desert-adapted giraffe, antelope, and birds. Activities focus on guided drives and walks, enjoying the total absence of noise, and the myriad ways to relax. Spoil yourself with a treatment or two at the spa, where the therapists are world-class and the balms are local.
