A vision of fruit trees and flowering vines, the perfectly-designed garden is the work of Hiroki Hasegawa. The vegetable and herb patches are well-represented in the delectable dishes from the restaurant — alongside the glorious sea food — which combines elements of Sicilian and Okinawan cuisine served in hand-crafted ceramics. The clifftop Banta Cafe is a lovely spot to enjoy a casual breakfast overlooking the beach. When you're in need of pampering, head to the spa for nature-infused treatments to remedy any travel aches.
Scattered amongst bougainvillea vines, and orchards of cherry, papaya and palm trees, there are 100 rooms and villas, all found in modernist, double-storey structures. The contemporary theme remains throughout with touches of local craftsmanship thrown in, like the intricate bingata textiles that depict every day life on the island. Each room has a glass-walled patio with a large dining table made from carbonised wood and kitchenette where you can prepare meals pre-made by the chefs (if you wish). All rooms have a seafront balcony as well but the largest are the Tida villas, which boast two bedrooms, a tatami mat room, a private pool, and direct beach access.
Hoshinoya sits on a quiet section of beach, where you can enjoy long strolls, go horseriding or paddle across the water in a 'sabani' boat — keep your eyes peeled for whales. The hotel also has a fantastic Activity Studio, which offers everything from karate classes with a local master to lessons in Ryukyu dance, music and stencil-dyeing. Otherwise, you could easily while away the day beside the infinity pool or enjoy a fragrant massage at the spa.
A sun-doused sanctuary, where excursions on the water & timeless traditions meet.
