The U-shaped main structure blends the best of Swedish design with clever energy-saving principles, such as the skylights that allow natural light to pool indoors throughout the year. The open-plan space is both chic and cosy, with a number of small seating areas gathered around a large stone fireplace. There are dining areas inside and out. Foldaway windows, earth-coloured concrete floors and natural materials help the lodge sit comfortable in the landscape. The pool itself is a viewing platform!
The 10 luxurious suites are solid, self-contained structures, slightly more hotel than tent-like in feel, but nevertheless extremely pleasant. At the foot of your king-sized bed, glass doors open to the deck and the panorama, and a dip in your private L-shaped plunge pool. Your en-suite bathroom has all you need – a deep bathtub, shower and double basin, and lush toiletries. There's aircon for hot days, and plenty of blankets for when winter chills strike.
This relatively small reserve offers a surprising variety of activities. Game drives certainly offer the best bet for viewing big game like elephant and lion. We're also fans of the river cruises and guided bush walks, which offer the chance to slow down and view things from a different perspective. Worth investigating too are some of the conservation programmes the owners of Kariega have been involved in over the years – notably, their rhino initiative.
