Narrow paths cut through the bush to the basic lounge-cum-mess tent at the camp's heart. The tent is open on one side, with views through the acacia woodland to a broad short-grass area. There's a small lounge furnished with sofas and a small selection of books. Most communal gatherings occur around the table, where food and conversation comes in hearty portions. A campfire is a staple feature in the evening, when guests chat over pre- and post-dinner drinks.
Seven double and twin safari tents are furnished with four-poster beds fitted with mosquito netting and comfortable mattresses. Canvas floors and zip-up, fold-away flaps are all that protect you from the elements, but they're more than adequate, as are the chemical no-flush toilets and bucket showers (heated on demand). The rooms also have a desk, luggage rack and directors' chairs, and are decently lit via solar panels. We enjoy the well-considered comfort of this endearing camp.
The Serengeti is renowned for its spectacular migrations: when zebra, wildebeest and antelope move en masse in search of green, nutrient-rich grasses. The throng thunders between Tanzania and Kenya, providing sights to remember – not just the sheer number of animals, but also cameos of the predators pursuing a meal. You're likely to see prides of lion stalking the herds for kilometres, or cheetah darting at unsuspecting stragglers. Game drives (usually self-guided) are the best way to view the action.
