Overlooking the jagged gorge and the grassy green savannah of Queen Elizabeth NP, framed perfectly by the misty-capped Moutains of the Moon, views from the main area are dreamy. Once the old coffee store, the lounge is now a contemporary chill-out area, with bleached wood floors, pale furnishing and funky ‘junk-art’ sculptures taking centre stage. There’s an inside dining area for chilly nights and a sunny terrace outside for morning coffee and evening G&Ts.
Balanced across the hillside and raised on stilts, the eight sleeping bandas are named after a member of the Kyambura chimp family. Each is individual in design with carefully chosen (and slightly whacky!) furniture, but common themes are fabulous floor-to-ceiling windows, sublime beds and spacious ensuite bathrooms with double vanities and hot water on tap. Outside on the veranda, hovering hanging chairs provide the perfect spot to drink in the tranquillity of the surroundings.
Most people come here for chimpanzee trekking in the Kyambura Gorge and although the hikes can be hard work, it’s a fantastic opportunity to see the playful primates. Boating down the Kazinga Channel is an excellent way to discover the wildlife of the region, as are the game drives in the National Park, with Kasenyi Plains famed for its large population of lion.
