About La Fontaine Franschhoek

A classic Franschhoek experience at this spangly guest house in the town’s centre.
After an amble down Main Street, turn off towards Le Bon Vivant (more about that later) and take a right on Dirkie Uys Street and you’ll find La Fontaine—an absolute gem of a guesthouse in the heart of Franschhoek and one that’s really quite affordable too. Having undergone an extensive renovation in 2018, the hotel has cast off its country roots and is now an uber-stylish haven to retreat to with plenty of design elements to please even the most hardened boutique hotel lover. Even better, the same team that has worked at the hotel for the last several years is still in place so expect personalised, efficient and friendlier-than-ever service.

Property details

The property

As you enter through the front door, you’ll see the airy breakfast room straight ahead (but breakfast is normally served on the tables outside) and to the right, a sultry, sexy lounge area complete with jewel-coloured velvet sofas, unusual artworks and a bar stocked with Cape Town’s latest artisanal gins. The lush, indigenous gardens hide two swimming pools, both with an abundance of cushy red loungers and fabulous views of the mountains of the valley. For evening drinks and morning coffees, relax on the terrace at the front of the house or take shade under the umbrellas outside the breakfast room.

The rooms

There are 6 bedrooms in the main house: room 1 is the incredibly luxurious honeymoon suite, complete with balcony and the biggest bathroom we’ve ever seen, but the others are just as stylish with their handpicked furniture and elegant colour schemes. There are also several Garden Suites dotted around the property. Each is spacious and meticulously decorated, but some have smaller bathrooms than others. All rooms come with everything you would expect – artisan tea, coffee machines, mini fridges, safes and hairdryers.

Activities

Only a stone’s throw away, a wander up and down the boutiques and galleries of Main Street is essential. When you’re ready for a pitstop, The Hoek serves the best coffee in town! No visit to Franschhoek would be complete without a visit to some of the nearby wineries and La Fontaine will happily organise a private tour around some of the best. And to clear your head in the morning, try one of the local hiking trails – there are plenty to be discovered.

Insiders Tip

The master suite in the main house is glorious – and we’ll take a bet that the bathroom is bigger than any you’ve ever seen!

Something to think about

The restaurant serves breakfast, but not lunch or dinner. With so many restaurants on the doorstep, it’s not really a problem but make sure to book your eateries in advance.
