About La Pirogue Hotel

A truly Mauritian-flavoured hotel that's the stuff of island dreams
Drifting off the east coast of Madagascar, a mere speck upon the world map, Mauritius may appear retiring. Don't be fooled. This island-nation blooms with rich biodiversity and a panoply of cultures, languages and customs. Those factors, plus a sophisticated tourism industry, make it an ideal vacation spot. One of the best retreats is La Pirogue Resort and Spa, famous for its impeccable service (stamped and sealed by the Queen of England herself), world-class dining (the head chef once oversaw the Gordon Ramsay Group in Doha) and, principally, its superb location (coconut-palmed beachfront, and views that dip to the horizon).

Property details

The property

Several thatched-roof structures, built to look like local sailing boats (pirogues), lend the grounds its air of rustic romance. Linking them are neat green lawns and islets of fragrant tropical plants. The beach itself is pristine, long and walkable for several kilometres in either direction. The two restaurants offer a choice of elegant or less-formal dining, and feature open-air and partially enclosed seating. Winding between the patios and pavilions, a rim-flow pool is studded with islands of frangipani tree-sheltered sunloungers.

The rooms

With around 250 guestrooms, La Pirogue may seem a crowded option, but the atmosphere is homely. The rooms are small but charming in that boho 70s style, with white walls, colourful textiles and macrame wall-hangings. Beach Pavilions are bright, with sea views and a private terrace. Larger Senior Suites have an open-plan living room, and a private gazebo on the beach. Garden Bungalows are pretty, and Garden Family Bungalows link two garden rooms. More deluxe options are also available.

Activities

Watersports lovers can indulge in their favourite activities – diving, game-fishing, snorkelling, kayaking and windsurfing. Prefer terra firma? Tennis courts and an 18-hole golf course are within relatively easy reach. Also nearby is Casela Bird Park, an excellent place to glimpse the island's endemic species. Although La Pirogue is practically an island in itself, exploring other villages, beaches, eateries and markets is worthwhile. Be pampered at the spa, or simply hang out in a hammock strung between the coconut palms.
