About Legendary Mila Tented Camp

Enjoy the broad splendour of the western Serengeti from this lovely little tented camp
Tanzania's Serengeti is one of the most productive wildlife regions on the planet and the wildebeest migration alone draws half a million pregnant cows in its annual cycle of birth, death and regeneration. Mila Tented Camp sits in the remote Nyasirori region opening onto the golden grasslands of this iconic reserve. Newly-relocated, this small, intimate property stands out for its commitment to not only great wildlife viewing, but to an authentic safari atmosphere where personal connection remains its core.

Property details

The property

Nestled within a patch of acacia woodland, Mila's classic safari tents marry old-school simplicity with modern luxury. The main area is an extended canvas structure with roll-up sides and all-around views of the bush. There are no fences and definitely no barriers for wildlife and it's not uncommon for everything from buck to elephant to lion to come wandering in. There's a living area with plush sofas, plenty of comfortable chairs and a small library and two dining tents with long tables, which flicker with candles by night. Outside is the campfire, surrounded by canvas chairs, where many a drink is sipped and story recounted.

The rooms

The five tented rooms are constructed of canvas with mesh panelling and roll-away windows. At their centre are four-poster beds, made up with pretty linens. Velvet curtains and reed-woven floor rugs contrast for a rustic yet elegant feel. En-suite bathrooms have double basins and, behind a partition, showers and flush toilets. The sixth (family) tent is an extended version of these with shared bathrooms. It's possible to be in nature but not of it.

Activities

Mila offers good resident wildlife viewing year-round, but becomes a major migration area when the herds come through. They gather on the banks of the Grumeti between May and June, tussling with some of the planet's largest crocodiles. Because of the vastness of the area and the kind of action it sees, game drives will be your principle preoccupation. However, walks are a rare and an excellent way of immersing yourself in this region – don't miss the chance. They may even include deliberate approaches to big game like lion and elephant. Night drives are another unique offering and can prove productive – pangolin, porcupine, aardvark are some of the critters you may catch footing around.
