About Lemala Osonjoi Lodge

Beat the crater crowds from the quieter east side where highland luxury reigns.
Perched at 8,000 feet on the eastern rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, Lemala Osonjoi offers something most safari lodges don't: peace, quiet, and first dibs on the crater's iconic wildlife. Named after the medicinal Osonjoi trees cherished by the Maasai, this newest addition to the Lemala portfolio gets you onto the crater floor in just 10 minutes via the lesser-used Lemala Gate. The 20 suites are all about pure safari luxury – think wood-burning stoves, fat-as-a-stack-of-pancakes duvets, and those all-important hot water bottles for chilly crater nights. The lodge is also one of the few allowed to serve lunch on the crater floor, adding the cherry on top to a fantastic experience.

Property details

The property

Built using recycled materials and entirely solar-powered, the main lodge is focused on thoughtful design that embraces the highland chill. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the lounge and dining areas with an ethereal light, whilst the roaring fireplace and sunken outdoor fire pit are welcome additions. The heated indoor swimming pool – the only one in the Ngorongoro area – sits behind panoramic windows overlooking the forest. A separate spa suite tucked among the trees offers complete seclusion for treatments, and the viewing deck provides front-row seats to the crater's ever-changing moods.

The rooms

20 suites (including two family-friendly, two-bedroom options) embrace the alpine atmosphere with slow-burning wood stoves, winter-weight duvets, and plenty of hot water bottles. Each has an enormous, oversized bed, a separate lounge area, and that genius 'secret nook' – a hidden daybed beside the fireplace. Bathrooms are gloriously spacious with double vanities, walk-in showers, and free-standing tubs positioned for maximum view gazing. Large windows frame the surrounding forest, and the hand-finished timbers and natural materials create a space that is both utterly luxurious but totally appropriate to the wild setting.

Activities

Game drives access the crater floor offer fabulous sightings of some of the continent's most iconic wildlife - and with access via the exclusive eastern route, you'll be among the first to arrive each morning and the last to leave during golden hour. The lodge's standout offering is fully catered private lunches on the crater floor – a rare privilege that transforms your game drive into an all-day adventure. Otherwise, enjoy guided rim walks with Maasai naturalists, visits to nearby villages, and spa treatments in the magical forest suite.

What you'll love

Being first on the crater floor each morning. While other 4x4s battle the morning traffic, you'll be photographing lions in golden light with barely another soul around.

Don't miss the 'secret nook' – a daybed tucked beside the fireplace in each suite - perfect for a post-game drive whisky whilst watching the mist roll across the forest.

At nearly 8,000 feet, it gets chilly up here. Pack layers and embrace the cosy highland atmosphere, rather than expecting endless sunshine.
