There is an understated elegance to the smart, earth-inspired decor that strikes just the right note between fashionable and discreet. A thatched roof supported by rustic wooden beams (in all their crooked glory) covers the lounge, library and dining area, and the spaces flow out to a wide, open-to-the-sky deck where meals are often served. There's a lovely built-in fireplace for cooler evenings, and plenty of plush seating designed for chatting or settling back with a book from the library.

The four enchanting chalets are constructed with rounded edges and a floor plan that's best described as "fluid". Double doors and large curved windows mean nature never feels cordoned off. To one side, a luxurious chaise longue beside a small fireplace is ideal for a midday nap. Outside, an elevated deck with a small plunge pool overlooks the bush and its inhabitants. The bathrooms are large, each fitted with a lovely deep bathtub, spacious walk-in shower and a double basin.

Game drives are generally the most reliable means of viewing big game here. And sightings are best between July and October, when the vegetation is sparse and the animals concentrate around water sources. Track Madikwe's renowned wild dogs, which live in large packs that cover vast distances each day. Take a night drive to see shy species such as bush baby, genet, civet and porcupine; and a guided walk to see the smaller creatures, and brush up your bush skills.
