About Makweti Safari Lodge

An elegant safari retreat in the magnificent Waterberg Mountains.
Makweti Safari Lodge is named after the ancient-looking giant euphorbia trees which are a striking feature of the beautiful Welgevonden Private Game Reserve, in Limpopo Province. This malaria-free reserve covers 37,000 hectares of Waterberg mountains, forests and pristine river valleys, with the lodge perfectly positioned at the top of a deep gorge carving between the surrounding hills. The rock and thatch design blends unobtrusively into the bushveld, with just five luxurious chalets set amongst the trees overlooking the valley below. This naturally game-rich wilderness is renowned for excellent game viewing and breathtaking scenery.

Property details

The property

The main area is an elegant thatch and stone sanctuary facing out across wide teak decks suspended over the sloping mountainside, with rough-hewn steps leading down to the rock pool below. African relics and wildlife-themed works of art echo the textures and colours of the surrounding bush throughout the quiet lounge areas and reading nooks, with a contemporary corner bar overlooking Makweti Gorge. Set back from the lodge, a tranquil viewing lounge overlooks the waterhole where wildlife comes to drink.

The rooms

Each of the five thatch and stone suites are well spaced in secluded privacy along a ridge of rocky hillside, with views across the valley below. Interiors are luxuriously furnished with cool colonial-style linens, richly coloured African fabrics and romantic fireplaces for the chilly Waterberg winters. The en-suite bathrooms feature deep Victorian baths, and indoor and outdoor showers. Three suites have private plunge pools, and each has its own private viewing deck.

Activities

Daily game drives and guided bush walks across rocky mountain slopes, wide open plains, lush river valleys and wooded gorges offer quality game viewing, with all of the Big 5 species present together with rarities like brown hyena and aardwolf. Birdwatching is excellent, with an astounding 300-plus species to be found. For an insight into the cultural heritage of this area, ask your guide about the ancient San rock art scattered throughout the reserve in a handful of sheltered spots.
