In keeping with the Great Plains philosophy of treading lightly, all materials used in the camp's construction are 'green' and/or recycled from elsewhere, and the entire place runs on solar power. But the main areas are still fabulously comfortable, with lots of chairs positioned to look out over the river and all its comings and goings, plus a gleaming show kitchen and cosy dining area for meals, and a campfire to retire to afterwards.
The six custom-designed tents at Expedition blend comfort and adventure, and are chockfull of rich furnishings, soft cottons and eclectic pieces from times gone by. The en-suite bathrooms aren't fancy, but all have hot showers, basins with hot and cold running water and flushing loos. Private verandas with camping chairs make the perfect spot for an afternoon snooze. And in the morning watch out for leopard tracks outside - the elusive cats are known to wander around in the middle of the night...
Wake up for an early morning game drive in open 4×4 vehicles to see the Mara's creatures moving around in the cool hours (the area is known for its excellent big cat action). Relax during the heat of the day, and then jump on an afternoon game drive and head out onto the plains to find the wildebeest of the Great Migration. Being in a prime location on private land means Mara Expedition can offer fantastic guided walks too! Hot air balloon flights over the Mara—surely one of the most spectacular experiences in Africa—are offered at an additional cost.
Mara Expedition Camp is owned by Great Plains which is dedicated to creating lasting, sustainable conservation solutions for the world's iconic wildlife and wilderness areas. Through their model of compassionate protection and intelligent management, funded by low-impact tourism, they integrate communities, governments, and the private sector. Embracing the concept of 'Conservation Tourism', they prioritise environmentally sound practices while ensuring benefits directly support conservation efforts without a negative impact on the land or wildlife. A contribution of $95 per guest, which is included in the nightly rate, goes towards the above goals.
