About Musango Safari Camp

A laid-back water-based safari with a legendary Zimbabwean guide.
Musango Safari Camp occupies its own island on Lake Kariba, near northern Zimbabwe's Matusadona National Park. The 223 kilometre-long manmade (nevertheless, wild) Lake Kariba is home to thriving populations of game fish (most notably tiger fish) and hundreds of species of birds. Hippos populate its waters and and elephants frequent its shores. Here your safari will largely occur from a pontoon boat - a smooth mode of transport, especially great for photographers. Walks and drives can be done in the neighboring national park but are less frequent.

Property details

The property

A double-decker Swiss-Family Robinson-esque thatched structure sits at the centre of camp. At the base you'll find the reception area, an amply furnished lounge and dining room with a specially-built crescent-shaped dining table where the particularly lively communal evening meals are served. Upstairs is a spacious open-sided deck with inspiring views over the lake where breakfast and brunch are usually served. Here, extra seating allows for comfortable midday armchair or sleeping safaris. Beneath this area is a small swimming pool and poolside patio, a hammock and more outdoor seating.

The rooms

The six simple chalets are an interesting blend of thatch, stone and canvas. They are well-spaced and connected to main camp via gravel walkways. There are an additional two, more sturdily-built, stone chalets - considered the honeymoon suites, which offer a little extra space and a tiny, private plunge pool on their doorsteps. All the rooms sleep two, have ensuite bathrooms with partially open-air stone showers and boast easterly views over the lake. Rooms can be a little dark and warm but a shady outdoor seating area offers a little reprieve.

Activities

Do as much or as little as you like here - after all, you're on island time. As with a typical safari, however, the camp schedule is organized around a morning and afternoon activity where you'll have several options. Boat trips get you up close to hippos and elephants especially, as well as the myriad of wildlife that come to the water's edge. Fishing is a favorite amongst seasoned anglers and novices alike. A walk with Steve reveals the invisible, interdependent web of the area's geography, flora and fauna. Musango was involved in the re-introduction of black rhino into the national park and offers an on-foot tracking safari, when appropriate. Much of what you do will be determined by your guide's expert discretion and the time of year.

If fishing is your thing - or even if it's not - wrestling a tiger fish offers some of the best, most memorable sporting fun in these parts.
Something to think about

Something to think about

This camp could use a few modern touches but nevertheless possesses a simple charm. It does, however, rely heavily on the winsome, engaging personality of veteran guide and camp owner, Steve Edwards, which can be both fabulous and potentially disappointing if he's not present.
