Effortlessly authentic, the mess tent is a tranquil canvas sanctuary perched on the edge of the Mara River, where dark wooden flooring, shimmering hurricane lanterns and swathes of dreamy drapes abound. Cosy up on a sofa and listen to the water tumbling languidly over the rocks and watch the hippo lazing in the sun. Just like a true bush camp, tasty farmhouse cuisine is served up family-style at the grand dining table by easy-going and super-friendly waiters.
Linked to the mess by a patchwork of trails along the riverbank, the four tents are cavernous and cool and complemented by a pretty palette of creams and khakis. Raised on polished hard-wood platforms, all tents face the river; ask for the canvas to be lowered on three sides to really make the most of view! And the outside bathroom isn’t just a bucket shower – this is the real deal with hot running water, sunken bathtubs and designer His’n’Hers sinks.
Game drives in the Mara North Conservancy are spectacular; spend all day exploring with your private guide or hop out for a couple of hours here and there. A walk in Serian’s private 16 km sq concession is also not to be missed, especially if followed with a night in the nearby Treehouse, sleeping under the stars, or in a traditional mobile camp. Fly camping is one of owner Alex Walker’s passions, so take advantage – this is probably one of the best places in Africa to try it out.
Ngare Serian is owned by Alex Walker's Serian, and founded on a profound respect for Kenya and Tanzania's wildernesses and cultures. Central to their ethos is preserving these areas by managing human interaction with wildlife. As populations grow and resources strain, Serian emphasizes making conservation profitable for locals. Note: a conservancy fee applies but is not included in the nightly rate.
