Raised above the ground on a platform, the serene main area is a combination of natural materials and contemporary furnishings, with floors of local hardwood. The thatch-roofed lounge (with varied levels separating the area into intimate seating spaces) and dining room (white linen, sparkling glassware and superb food) are relaxed and welcoming. Chill out in the library, and relax in the crowning glory of the main area – the pool overlooking the waterhole.
The lodge has six well-spaced tented suites overlooking the Sand River. Although these are canvas structures, they're far more than just a tent – the interiors' clean modern lines and natural materials epitomise chic simplicity. Each has a central four-poster bed surrounded by seating and ample room to move, and a stone-floored en-suite bathroom with a large shower, twin basins and flush toilet. Shaded verandas in front of the tents are perfect for admiring the passing animal traffic.
Apart from drives in the surrounding concession and neighbouring Tarangire National Park, there are several other activities on offer. Take a sunrise hot-air balloon ride (for phenomenal views, and photos), a day-trip to the Ngorongoro Crater (for exceptional game viewing), or a visit to Lake Manyara National Park (for incredible flamingo populations). Guided walks and night drives offer another perspective of the area's wildlife, and visits to a local school and nearby Maasailand Boma offer insights into Tanzania's incredible people.
