It may be a temporary bush camp but in the dusty sand, under the shade of a towering indigenous tree, you'll find an impeccable grey and red outdoor lounge complete with coffee table, safari books and African-chic cushions. Dining is under a canopy of trees, at a long table lined safari-style directors chairs, and food is home-cooked, hearty and delicious. Off to one side, the dry riverbed opens up so you can watch impala saunter by whilst you sip your morning coffee, brewed over the campfire. Magic.
The four walk-in canvas tents are at a good distance from each other so although the camp is intimate, it's also private. Each has a view over the dry riverbed and are simply but stylishly decked out with comfy double beds, cotton linen with colourful throws, a side table and a canvas wardrobe. The ensuite outdoor bathroom is spacious and has a reed floor and walls. There’s a washbasin stand with a mirror, bucket shower warmed by solar and a “porcelain throne” that’s environmentally friendly.
The wilderness experience takes centre stage here. There are game drives, walking safaris and full-day expeditions leave straight from camp, and you can expect to see lion, elephant, buffalo, hippo, hyena and more. Night drives are also possible in the South Luangwa (unusual for a national park - but we're not complaining!) giving you the chance to spot genet, civet and bushbaby. Gavin, the head guide, has an excellent reputation in safari circles and he's one of the most reponsible and ethical guides we've come across.
