The main area radiates around the bar, with its long countertop that incorporates the owner's old wooden boat. The area is uncluttered, with just a few tables and a couple of chairs looking seaward. The main seating area is outside on the deck – whether for lounging or dining – with a lovely view of the ocean. The decor is quite old-fashioned (somehow part of the family-holiday charm). There's a sparkling pool, and an accompanying massage room.
There are 39 rooms in total, 26 of which are standard rooms with varied sleeping configurations. These rooms are simple but spotlessly clean, with aircon, mosquito-netted beds and basic en-suite bathrooms. There's also a family unit with two rooms, and a more spacious suite in the garden (with indoor/outdoor seating areas, a fridge and a bathroom with tub). Ocean Cottage is self-catered, with four bedrooms, a spacious lounge, a fully equipped kitchen and an outdoor dining area with a barbecue.
This is definitely an adventure sports-lovers dream. Take your pick: go kayaking in the mangroves or on the sea, windsurfing, snorkelling the marine reserve reefs (the on-site dive centre offers training and gear), deep-sea fishing or fishing in Mida Creek. Mountain biking and birdwatching are popular too. Note that all these activities incur an extra cost. Walk the beach and explore the rock pools, relax with a massage, or just chill and enjoy a cocktail on the deck.
Dazzling beaches, a world-class marine park and a dose of history – welcome to Watamu.
