About Ol Malo House

A ranch-style Kenyan lodge with incredible views over the surrounding bush

Ol Malo is a privately owned game sanctuary and working ranch in northern Kenya’s Laikipia Plateau, spanning 5,000 acres of rugged hills and valleys overlooking Mount Kenya. Once an overgrazed cattle farm, Ol Malo has been transformed into a conservation area, literally teeming with wildlife. Ol Malo House is a stunning six-bedroomed homestead perched on a rocky outcrop with sweeping views of the valleys and hills beyond. With a range of fabulous (and some totally unusual!) activities, this is the perfect bush break for anyone looking for excellent game-viewing and a whole lot of fun. For families and groups of friends, the house can be booked exclusively.

Property details

The property

Inspired by the surrounding landscape, the main house is constructed from stone, thatch and timber in an unusual flowing style. Décor is natural, and features beautiful hand-crafted Samburu artefacts and organic linens and cloths throughout. The vast open-plan lounge and dining area has with several open fireplaces for chilly evenings, but for warmer days, a flagstone pathway leads out to the infinity pool and outdoor barbecue terrace both overlooking the valley below.

The rooms

Accommodation consists of three rooms in the main house, and three separate cottages. The best views are from the upstairs suite in the main house (at the top of the spiral staircase) but all are incredibly spacious, with en-suite bathrooms featuring beautiful free-form stone bath tubs. All rooms have a unique, quirky design, with natural stone walls, stunning timber inlays and accents of colourful Samburu culture. The cottages are a short distance from the main house, with double bedrooms, arch windows and doors, and wonderful views across the valley.

Activities

Guided game drives and bush walks are offered, together with a number of more unusual activities, like river tubing and camel trekking - really! Guests of all riding abilities may explore on horseback, and there is also the option of mountain biking. Overnight stays are possible in a secluded hide overlooking a waterhole. Bush picnics and scenic sundowners can be arranged, and there’s also the opportunity to visit the local Samburu village which is a poignant and lovely experience.
