Tarangire
Named after the Maasai word for leopard, life at Olkeri Camp is centred around wildlife. Situated right on Tarangire's border in the Randilen Wildlife Management Area, what makes Olkeri special isn't just the prime waterhole views or the fact you can walk straight from camp into elephant country – it's the freedom that comes with being outside park boundaries. Night drives, walking safaris, fly camping under the stars, and authentic Maasai meetings are all on the menu. Run by the excellent Entara, this is traditional bush camping done right, where ancient baobabs frame your breakfast and buffalo wander past your tent.
Tucked between two magnificent baobabs, the main area feels wonderfully rustic with its mess tent, lounge, and outdoor fire pit overlooking twin waterholes. Built-in wooden sofas with plump cushions create a cosy atmosphere, while the separate dining area serves up excellent meals made with fresh, seasonal ingredients. The bar stocks local wines and spirits, and staff are always on hand for G&Ts at sunset (or whenever you fancy). Evening fires are lit religiously at 6:30pm, creating the perfect spot for swapping safari stories under a starry sky.
Raised on wooden platforms, there are just eight comfortable canvas tents, each with an expansive veranda perched 'just so' for ultimate wildlife spotting. The interiors are softly done with pale teak panelling, wicker furniture, and earth-toned textiles, and they come with king-size beds, writing desks, and cosy sitting areas. En-suite bathrooms have fantastic showers and flush loos, with solar heating providing reliable hot water. For families, interconnected tents are available while some are even accessed via rope suspension bridges over seasonal waterways.
Game drives explore both Randilen and Tarangire itself, seeking out the area's famous elephant herds, big cats, and exceedingly diverse wildlife. Walking safaris with expert guides reveal smaller wonders, while night drives offer thrilling encounters with nocturnal species like genets and civets. Fly camping provides utterly unique memories of the bush, and authentic Maasai cultural visits let you in on age-old traditions. Hot air balloon safaris float over the wilderness, while bush meals and sundowners can be arranged anywhere from rocky kopjes to riverbanks – the sense of freedom is exquisite.
