Connected to the rooms by raised wooden walkways, the communal area is where guests gather to eat at a large table beside the open-plan kitchen – chatting to the chef as he works is encouraged. His food is excellent (don't miss the banana and rum mousse!). The dining room also overlooks the waterhole, so keep your camera to hand. After eating, relax in the lounge or beside the small fire pit to listen to the night hum and watch the animals drinking.
The four canvas-and-thatch rooms are built on stilts – leave one side open at night if you'd like to feel a closer connection to nature and hear the animals moving below, or simply roll it down. Inside, the large bed is mosquito-netted, the decor is neutral, with crisp white linen and touches of green, and the bathroom forms part of the bedroom, with a closed-off lavatory. On the deck, a screened open-air shower allows you to watch the waterhole while washing.
From Onguma Tree Top Camp, you can take guided game drives into Etosha National Park (drinks included), as well as day-time and sundowner drives and guided walks within Onguma Reserve itself. Settle back in the lounge (there is free wi-fi throughout the property) or on the deck, or head off for a post-lunch snooze. The choice is yours.
A safari wonderland, where plentiful waterholes amid the salt pans attract even more plentiful game.
