With its white gabled exterior, extensive veranda and manicured lawns (accented by two tall palms), Penhill's elegant facade is typically Cape Dutch in style. Indoors, it's clear that great care has been taken in the restoration, with clever modern fixtures complementing the mood. Terracotta floors and large wooden door frames lead to rooms furnished in comfortable Scandinavian style. The kitchen ( fabulous wood-burning stove!) and dining room are places to linger, as is the braai area with plentiful cushioned seating.
The manor house sleeps a total of eight people in four light-filled rooms that are decorated beautifully, with crisp white linens, super-comfortable furnishings and chic en-suite bathrooms. Four separate cottages on the property each sleep four. The cottages function as self-contained units, each with a mini fridge, lounge area and small kitchen. All have French doors that open to a lovely garden-facing veranda, perfect for a quiet morning with a book.
From the tennis court, swimming pool and dam to walking trails, mountain-biking opportunities and the wine cellar, there are plenty of places to spend your time. The Cape Fold Mountain Belt offers loads of trails and gorges for both mild and serious adventurers. The nearby town of Worcester has a good food, wine and craft beer scene, but if it's fine-dining experiences you're after, Franschhoek and Stellenbosch are the places to be. This area oozes history and charm.
A little-explored gem where hills roll into the ocean and nature reserves rub against golden sands.
