About Pepo House

Light ocean breezes lull you to sleep at this lusciously simple beach house
Kizingoni Beach is a wonderfully laid-back, 24 kilometres-long sandy shoreline on the southernmost tip of Lamu Island, Kenya's famous UNESCO World Heritage Site. Along the sands and set beneath rustling palm trees lie an assortment of private houses, each with its own distinct style and features. Pepo House, set further back from the beach, faces westwards, where the dramatic sunsets set the water ablaze with colour. Pepo is the KiSwahili word for "wind", and thanks to its elevated position and central tower, the house contains numerous spaces to sit back and let the Indian Ocean breeze lull you to sleep.

Property details

The property

"Generous" is the word to describe Pepo House. Its outside terrace with makuti-thatched pavilions and swing beds, all set against gorgeous indigenous gardens, offer loads of privacy and space. The traditional baraza (gathering area), with its large wraparound dining terrace with light wooden furnishings, overlooks the swimming pool flanked by two large trees. Indoors, another dining area has a fridge and drinks cupboard, and there's a fully equipped kitchen for guests who prefer a self-catering option.

The rooms

The house, which sleeps up to 10 guests, rises up out of the central part of the property. On the ground floor is a twin bedroom; the first floor offers two double en-suite bedrooms; and the second floor houses the huge master suite, its private terrace overlooking the sea. Outside, a separate guesthouse has an en-suite guestroom, a pool and massage room. All the rooms are spacious, decorated with local Swahili flair and a touch of glam, and mosquito nets.

Activities

Activities are beach- and water-based, naturally. Swim with dolphins, or try fishing, snorkelling, wake-boarding, sailing and kayaking, all of which can be arranged with the house staff. Take a dhow cruise to the fishing towns of Lamu and Shela, and unspoilt Kipungani village. In the evenings, settle back on a slow dhow, drinks and samosas in hand, to admire the sunset. Too lazy to budge? Relax on the beach or poolside with a book and, importantly, your sunscreen.
