About Pole Pole

A rustic beach lodge, where exotic island jungle meets ocean paradise.
In Swahili Pole Pole means 'slowly, slowly' a very apt description for this picturesque quaint lodge built up on the hillside set amidst palm trees sloping down to a small sandy shore lined with mangroves. The lodge has a distinct unpretentious and laid back atmosphere that has garnered it a lot of accolades as one of the best luxury eco resorts in the world. Let your phone battery die and disconnect from the outside world. The service is discreet and thoughtful with heavily Italian-influenced cuisine with a Tanzanian flair. Relax with the tides—the perfect compliment to any bush safari.

Property details

The property

Pole Pole is not showy, but rather refreshingly elegant. Simple Makuti structures are built from local materials. The reception area leads down to and a raised wooden dining platform near the water, all with open sides to maximise the breeze coming off the water and pathways lead off into the bush to each of the bungalows. A little bar, where only the sounds of the palms trees can be heard, is the perfect sundown spot.

The rooms

Each of the five large self contained bungalows and two family styled bungalows are nestled amongst the palms. While there might not be expansive views over the water the privacy on offer is a draw card. Makuti thatched roofs furnished with traditional Tanzanian wooden furniture such as large poster beds, outdoor day beds and delicate decorative elements scattered throughout. In keeping with eco principles there is only natural ventilation that cools you down satisfactorily.

Activities

There are various activities on offer, most of them based around the water. A nearby dive centre caters for underwater exploration as well as dhow cruises. There is a little onsite spa that has basic but welcomed treatments on offer. Take part in a guided mangrove or village walk to learn about the local environment and the people of Mafia. There is also a lovely pool area shaded by sails when the tide rises and the beach disappears.

This is not a luxurious lodge, so leave your hairdryer, designer clothes and laptop behind. Come for stillness, peace and a serious digital detox.
