About Porini Cheetah Camp

Escape the crowds at this intimate camp in the northern Mara wilderness.
Thirty kilometres east of the world-famous Masai Mara Reserve lies the lesser-known and blissfully crowd-free Ol Kinyei Conservancy, where the diverse landscapes support an exciting variety of game. It's also the setting of Porini Cheetah Camp, a brand-new classic tented camp that opened its zips in July 2017. Porini Cheetah has only six tents, so you're in for a private and intimate safari. Head out for some superb wildlife sightings, and enjoy the excellent hosting. You can also venture into the Mara or the adjacent Naboisho Conservancy from here, although you won't have these to yourself.

Property details

The property

The main area is unpretentious and uncomplicated, yet appealing in its simplicity. One tent is furnished with classic (though comfortable) armchairs; the second contains the dining room, a pleasant space where evening meals are served by candlelight. Outside, shaded by a few umbrellas and a fever tree, are a few more tables, and there's an open-air fireplace around which you can share your experiences. Your warm hosts are Jui and Nirmalya Bannerjee, whose passion for the bush is infectious.

The rooms

Set at the base of a rocky outcrop, six large canvas tents are shaded by a few tall acacia trees. The tents are simple in design, with few bells and whistles, but they're more than comfortable with large double beds, plenty of storage space and a few beautifully woven rugs adding a touch of elegance. One room can be made up to sleep three. The en-suite bathrooms have basins, a shower and a separate toilet. The entire camp is solar-powered.

Activities

Morning and afternoon game drives into the Masai Mara Reserve and neighbouring Naboisho are a must, but the most exclusive ventures, with the lowest number of vehicles, are in Ol Kinyei itself. Visit all three sanctuaries to see an impressive wishlist of animals, such as large herds of wildebeest, zebra, several antelope species and, hopefully, big cats. Take a bush walk with a Masai guide, or soar above the savanna in a hot-air balloon (at extra cost).
