As the 30s were rolling into town, Raffles Le Royal took its place as one of Phnom Penh's top hotels. With a grand look and famous guest list (Jackie Kennedy has a cocktail named after her), Raffles occupies one of the best addresses in Cambodia's capital city. The hotel has one new wing, but its interiors hark back to a different time with black-and-white photos along its elegant corridors and a fine blend of Khmer and French styles. The property

In gardens filled with the scent of frangipani, you have a choice of two refreshing pools (one's adults-only!). Dine on recipes once reserved for Cambodia's royalty in the elegant restaurant such as lobster amok or a local take on French desserts flambeed at your table. Breakfast is a feast of egg stations, pastries and fruit shakes while the bold Le Phnom 1929 is a jazzy evening spot to enjoy one of the famous 'Around the World in 80 wines'. The spa has relaxing Khmer treatments and a hot tub.

The rooms

Set across the original and new wings, the rooms have a classic feel with moulded walls, gleaming wood furnishings and marble bathrooms. The Landmark Rooms enjoy a butler service, 1920s clawfoot tubs and antique decor (some have a balcony too). There's a range of suites, with four-poster beds and French overtones in the spacious living areas. Some have a deep history, with names inspired by well-known guests or periods in Cambodia's history. Raffles' finest offering is Le Royal Suite with two bedrooms, a dining room and lounge dressed in Khmer silks.

Activities

One of Cambodia's most storied cities, Phonm Penh has plenty to do. Raffles is just 10 minutes from the riverfront, where the Mekong Delta seeps into the city, and a cruise along the water is a scenic way to start your visit. See the spired Silver Pagoda and Royal Palace, where the king of Cambodia sometimes resides and take in centuries of history at the National Museum. Stroll through the Central Market to browse, snap a few photos or simply enjoy the sights and sounds of the city - and be sure to grab some grub!
