The swish decor at the Riverside Boutique blends Laotian and French colonial design to give you a taste of the town's history. Outside, you'll find a perfectly manicured garden, where two enormous rain trees take pride of place, an inviting pool overlooking those views, and small spa rooms in traditional grass huts. For meals, the Restaurant du Crabe d’Or offers a tempting selection of dishes, focusing largely on local favourites (lemon grass pork skewers, and traditional steamed fish wrapped in banana leaves should have your mouth watering), but also serves a western offering.
There are 34 rooms and suites, all set around the pool but some have better views of the mountains than others. With terracotta floors and stylish wooden furniture, rooms are cool and chic, and the private balconies and patios are lovely additions for taking in those glorious surroundings. Ensuite bathrooms (complete with enormous, spoiling bathtubs), air-con and minibars are all standard.
To really understand Vang Vieng, you have to get outside and experience it - and if you're at the Riverside Boutique, you're in the right place. The resort works with local travel specialists, Laos Green Discovery, and offers kayaking along the river, hot air ballooning, climbing, abseiling, mountain biking and hiking. Dedicate a day to each and get off the beaten track, or combine them all for a full day of adventuring. The spa will be waiting at the end.
Scenery from the gods and bucket-loads of adventure: welcome to the new Vang Vieng.
